It’s been a month that we have a toddler in the house, and I finally got to share the most exciting moment of the entire birthday celebration.. THE SMASH CAKE PHOTO SHOOT.
We decided to do it few days before the party, because I wanted to have an alternative in case something goes wrong. You know, if I mess up with the cake or something.
I’ve planned the entire thing well in advance. Ordered props, decorated, designed her flower crown, made the cake …all that in the wee hours before the big day. The most stressful part of the entire planning was of course, the cake. I mean, it was the first time I’m making a cake that requires baking!! I wanted it to be a healthy, baby-friendly cake, so she can enjoy eating her way through it, which I knew she will (don’t be fooled by her tiny appearance, this girl loves to eat!). I’ve scoured the internet to find some healthy yet tasteful recipes and finished up combining two. It was a banana-apple cake, topped with some whipping cream, sweetened with a bit of maple syrup. And it turned out pretty good!
Even though we didn’t get the best version of Lana those days before her birthday, which usually happens around every milestone she hits, she got excited almost as much as we were at the moment she saw the flower decorations and the cake. She even left the flower crown stay on her head the entire time, which never happens!
There was something special in that moment, when she got to try her very first piece of cake, made just for her (okaay, we did try some of the leftovers, too). But it felt like she is leaving behind the world of baby purees and entering an entire new stage in her life. Or maybe that’s just how I want to think about it 🙂
The entire photo shoot was spontaneous and fun, with lots of giggles and a good cry at the end, when a big piece of cake fell onto her lap and she decided she is not into eating it anymore. It was a lovely memorable experience that marked the first year together with this little person in our lives.
This is just a glimpse of it.
